Growth begins outside your comfort zone
🕓 1:25 pm - 1:45 pm📍 River Room 3 (Lv 3)
Stepping outside your comfort zone isn't always about taking bigger risks—it can simply mean saying "yes" before you feel ready.
As a cybersecurity graduate, I never expected that joining Toastmasters would improve how I communicate technical ideas, or that a conversation with a friend would lead me to become the security lead on an anti-scam communication verification project.
This talk isn't about teaching cryptography or security frameworks. Instead, it's about the journey of learning beyond textbooks—working with teammates from different disciplines, discussing architecture with industry professionals, understanding compliance and customer requirements, and discovering that real cybersecurity is as much about people, communication, and trust as it is about technology.
Whether you're a student, an early-career professional, or someone considering your next challenge, I hope this story encourages you to take that first uncomfortable step. You may discover opportunities you never expected.
Speakers
Quentin Qi
Cybersecurity professional focused on security architecture, secure system design, and building trusted digital solutions through collaboration, continuous learning, and community engagement
Quentin is a cybersecurity professional based in Perth with a passion for security architecture, API security, and designing systems that build trust in digital communications. He is currently contributing as the security lead on an anti-scam communication verification project, focusing on secure architecture, threat modelling, privacy-by-design, and translating security requirements into practical business solutions. His work extends beyond technical implementation to collaborating with industry professionals, exploring regulatory considerations, and ensuring security decisions align with real-world operational needs. Outside of cybersecurity, Quentin is an active Toastmasters member who believes strong communication is just as important as technical expertise. Through continuous learning, community involvement, and real-world projects, he enjoys challenging himself outside his comfort zone and encouraging others to do the same.
Ken Lin
