At first, when we heard that DDD Perth was held in a stadium, we thought there was no way that could be true. Turns out it is. Well done, Perth! Once we learned the truth of the matter, we just had to come and check it out ourselves and share our zombie sock love. Yeah, we love zombies if the name didn't give it away. And we love our zombie sock merch. That, plus, our co-CEO Paul loves to hear himself talk and our other one, Demelza, loves a stage.Visit Patient Zero →

From 'Human Only' to 'AI First': How Canva Reimagined Tech Interviews
🕓 10:20 am - 11:05 am📍 Room 4 - Cygnet room (Lv 2)Thanks to AI, the software engineering landscape is changing quickly. At Canva, we’ve redesigned our technical interview process to reflect how real engineering work happens today: with AI tools integrated into every part of the workflow.
In this talk, I’ll share why we now expect candidates to use AI tools like Copilot, Cursor, or Claude in our interviews for backend, frontend, and ML roles. I'll share the reasoning behind this shift, including why traditional “from-scratch” coding assessments no longer reflect the skills engineers actually need. I’ll explain how we created complex, ambiguous product challenges that evaluate judgment, collaboration with AI, and real-world coding fluency, not just textbook knowledge.
You’ll hear what we learned from piloting this approach, how we addressed concerns around rigor, and what skills truly distinguish top candidates in an AI-assisted world. If you’re rethinking your own interview process, or want to understand how AI is reshaping developer workflows, this talk will offer practical insight into what engineering excellence looks like in 2025.
