Beyond the Interface: Designing Systems, Not Screens

🕓 1:25 pm - 2:10 pm📍 River Room 1 (Lv 3)
The carefully crafted interfaces we obsess over today may one day feel like VHS tapes or Walkmans, clunky relics from a time when technology worked harder for less. We are moving toward something smarter. Fewer screens. Fewer clicks. More prediction. Real user-centred design will focus on building systems that quietly understand, anticipate, and get things done. In this session, I will explore how design and data teams can collaborate to create these systems. I will share practical ways designers can contribute to data projects through strategy, service design, and storytelling. I will also show how data engineers and scientists can empower design by shaping how information flows, building stronger foundations, and unlocking the potential of machine learning and AI. Much like winter, Web 4.0 is coming, and we won’t get there by designing or building in siloes.

It’s such a privilege to be able to run this conference and DDD Perth would love to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land in which DDD is created, presented, and shared, the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
